In-depth answers on Korea SGI, Soka Gakkai, the Lotus Sutra, Buddhism, society, and culture
Buddhism
The Lotus Sutra (法華經, 법화경) is a central Mahayana Buddhist scripture teaching that all beings can attain Buddhahood. It forms the doctrinal foundation of Soka Gakkai (創価学会) and Korea SGI (韓國SGI).
Nichiren (日蓮, 1222–1282) was a 13th-century Japanese Buddhist priest who proclaimed the Lotus Sutra (法華經) as the essential teaching for the Latter Day and established Nam-myoho-renge-kyo (南無妙法蓮華経). He is the philosophical source of Soka Gakkai (創価学会) and Korea SGI (韓國SGI).
Thought
Human dignity is the philosophical and ethical principle that every person possesses inherent and inviolable value, regardless of birth, background, or ability. Ikeda Daisaku (池田大作) connected it to the Lotus Sutra's teaching on Buddha nature as the foundation of modern peace philosophy.
Philosophically, happiness is understood either as hedonia (maximizing pleasure) or eudaimonia (fulfilling human potential through virtue). Buddhist and Soka philosophy define happiness as an inner life state—'absolute happiness' arising from value creation rather than external conditions.
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo (南無妙法蓮華経) means 'devotion to the Mystic Law of the Lotus Sutra.' Established by Nichiren (日蓮) in 1253 as the core practice (daimoku) for the latter age, it is the fundamental chant of Soka Gakkai (創価学会) and Korea SGI (韓國SGI).
Society
Peace studies (Peace and Conflict Studies) investigates the causes of violence and the conditions for positive peace—beyond the mere absence of war. Built on Johan Galtung's framework of direct, structural, and cultural violence, it integrates conflict resolution, disarmament, social justice, and human dignity.
The tension between community and individual freedom is a central debate in political philosophy, pitting liberal individualism against communitarianism. Buddhist interdependence (pratītyasamutpāda) offers a third path: the self and community are mutually constitutive, not opposed.
Culture
The best philosophy introduction depends on your starting question. Western philosophy offers systematic frameworks for knowledge, politics, and ethics; Eastern philosophy—Confucian, Buddhist, Daoist—addresses existence, practice, and meaning. Identifying your question first prevents being overwhelmed by the breadth of the tradition.
A book review (서평) critically analyzes a book's arguments, methods, and cultural significance—it's a professional form of literary criticism. A 'review' in the informal sense is a reader-centered response focused on personal recommendation. ACA Magazine follows the editorial review standard, evaluating argument structure and humanistic significance.
People
Ikeda Daisaku (池田大作, 1928–2023) was the third president of Soka Gakkai (創価学会) and the founder of Soka Gakkai International (SGI). He transformed a Japanese Buddhist organization into a global peace movement active in more than 192 countries, including Korea SGI (韓國SGI).
